Zachary is the TOP EAGLE!

This week Zachary was selected as the Top Eagle from his class. As the Top Eagle, Zachary got to each lunch on the stage with the Assistant Principal, Ms. Draper. We are so proud of Zachary for working hard and always doing his best.

Mrs. Mott selected Zachary because he is a kind, respectful student! She pointed out that, "Zachary wants to learn and is excited to know new things!"

Way to go Zachary!

Jump Off Winner!

Each week, at Jump Rope Club, the team ends practice with a jump off. Each of the students begins jumping and as they miss the rope, they sit down. Once they are down to the last two jumpers....the jump off winners are decided. it usually takes around 3-4 minutes of straight jumping to win.

This week, Elizabeth was one of the last two jumping...and was declared a Jump Off winner!

We are so proud of Elizabeth for all of the hard work that she dedicates to the team!

Zachary's Pre-OIT Appointment for Eggs

Today we met with Dr. Jones' medical assistant, Jennifer Bunker to discuss Zachary's next round of OIT treatments. It was mostly an informational meeting with a quick physical to check that Zachary is healthy and ready for Day One of Egg OIT on January 8th.

I was a little nervous because Zachary had a reaction at school yesterday. Just as the day was about to begin, Zachary knocked on my office door with red eyes and tears pouring down his face. I immediately thought he was hurt, but as I opened my office door and heard the sneezing, I knew that he was struggling with a reaction. I gave him 10ml of Zyrtec and whisked him off to the Sick Room in the Main Office.

Within minutes, Zachary's face began to swell as welts developed around his eyes, on his forehead, behind his ears, and on his neck. Before we know it, his right eye was swollen shut and he started to have a bit of a wheeze when he inhaled and exhaled.

After monitoring him for about an hour and a half, I decided that the reaction was passing and not progressing, so I sent him home to rest with my Dad. We are forever grateful to Papa for his willingness to step in and help us out at a moments notice.

I am so grateful that my little man is doing okay and that we were able to get him his medicine so quickly. I feel so blessed to be able to work at my children's school. I love that I am so close and that my kids can run to me in their times of need. I appreciate all the love and concern that each of my co-workers showed towards Zachary and Me. Although it was scary, I felt my Savior's love through this entire ordeal and I am so grateful to know that no matter what, families can be together forever!

Back to today's appointment...

Fortunately, Zachary passed the physical with flying colors and he will be able to begin next week. Jen feels that Zachary's reaction was due to being overheated within an hour of taking his morning milk dose. I am thankful that this recent reaction did not derail our plans to begin OIT again. We have been waiting for a little over a year and are extremely grateful to be able to begin again!

Now we begin preparations and say our prayers that things will go smoothly on Tuesday!

Another One Bites The Dust!

Zachary lost another tooth! They are seriously dropping like flies! This is the fourth tooth to fall out, and his third since June 10th. He has been losing one a month for the past three months!

His toothless grin is stinkin' adorable and I cannot get over the little lisp he has developed with the loss of his front teeth. Every once in a while he whistles when he talks...and it is the cutest thing ever!

Man, I love this little boy! He definitlely has me wrapped around his little finger. When he smiles at me, it melts my heart. It is so great to see him reaching all of these milestones...but it makes me a tiny bit sad that my little guy is growing up! 

Ways To Strengthen The Family

Today I had the opportunity to speak in our church's sacrament meeting. As a newly called member of the Relief Society Presidency, I, along with my fellow presidency members were each given a topic to discuss. I was asked to speak on "Ways to Strengthen My Family". Here is the message that I shared. I based my talk on a Conference Talk titled, "In Praise of Those Who Save" by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf.

Brother Daniels asked me to speak about Ways to Strengthen the Family. As soon as I heard this topic, I immediately thought of The Family: A Proclamation to the World. It is such an inspired document and one that is close to my heart. 

In this proclamation we learn that "...the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His Children." We also learn that we lived in the premortal realm and worshipped God as our Eternal Heavenly Father. The divine plan of happiness was introduced and enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for us to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally." The proclamation goes on to say that, "The family is ordained of God and that marriage is essential to His eternal plan." 

This inspired document details that, "Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities."

When President Gordon B. Hinckley first read "The Family: A Proclamation to the World", it provided clarity and simplicity. It taught truth. Little did we realize then how very desperately we would need these basic declarations in today's world as the very definition of family is being challenged in the media, on the Internet, by scholars, on TV and in films, and even legislators within the government. The proclamation on the family should be our benchmark for judging the philosophies of the world. I know that the principles set forth in this document are true and if followed will strengthen our families.

Now I feel the need to address the fact that not all families look the same. Let's be honest here...As each of us dreamt about the future and what it would hold for us...not one person hoped that they would be single forever, or that they wanted to grow up and get divorced, or that they would end up childless, or widowed. Families come in all shapes and sizes. It is important to understand and teach the Lord's pattern and strive for the realization of that pattern the best we can. The challenge here on Earth is to find happiness no matter what our family may look like and to strengthen the family that we have been given. 

So how do we do that? 

President Uchtdorf in his talk titled, "In Praise of Those Who Save" counselled the Brethren of the Church to "astonish your wife by doing things that make her happy!" I would add to that, Sisters, astonish your husband by doing things that make him happy!" I would go even further to say, Parents, astonish your children by doing things that make them happy and; children, astonish your parents by doing things that make them happy. Marriages rarely, if ever, end in divorce when the husband and wife are happy. Families rarely, if ever, fall apart when all family members are working together to make each other happy. 

Those who save their eternal families, do so by choosing happiness! Abraham Lincoln once said, "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." It fits nicely with its scriptural companion, "Seek, and ye shall find."

If we look for imperfections in our spouse, or irritations with our family members, we will certainly find them, because everyone has some. On the other hand, if we look for the good, we will surely find it, because everyone has many good qualities too.

Another way to strengthen our families is by setting aside pride. The great enemy of charity is pride. Pride is one of the biggest reasons marriages and families struggle. Pride is short-tempered, unkind, and envious. Pride exaggerates its own strength and ignores the virtues of others. Pride is selfish and easily provoked. Pride assumes evil intent where there is none and hides its own weaknesses behind clever excuses. Pride is cynical, pessimistic, angry, and impatient. Indeed, if charity is the pure love of Christ, then pride is the defining characteristic of Satan. 

Life is short. Regrets can last a long time--some will have repercussions that echo throughout eternity. The way you treat your family...your spouse, your children...may influence generations to come. What legacy do you want to leave your posterity? One of harshness, vengeance, anger, fear, and isolation? Or one of love, humility, forgiveness, compassion, spiritual growth, and unity? For the sake of our family relationships, for the sake of our souls, we need to be merciful and set aside pride. 

Ask yourself...Is being right more important than fostering an environment of nurturing, healing, and love? Build bridges, don't destroy them. Even when you are not at fault--perhaps especially when you are not at fault--let love conquer pride. 

If you do this, whatever adversity you are facing will pass, and because of the love of God in your heart, contention will fade. These principles of saving relationships apply to all of us, regardless of whether we are married, divorced, widowed, or single. We all can stand up for and defend strong families. 

As we let go of pride, we can begin to love as the Savior loves. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf taught, "as we emulate the Savior's love, He will surely bless and prosper our righteous efforts to save our marriages and strengthen our families." The Savior taught us to turn away from the natural man and to replace contention with forgiveness, kindness, and compassion. He showed us how to support each other and lift each other up. I love the quote, "Thee lift me, I'll lift thee, and we'll ascend together eternally" Isn't that what we want...to all ascend together into the presence of our Heavenly Father. 

It is important to remember that strong marriages and family relationships require constant, intentional work. The doctrine of eternal families must inspire us to dedicate our best efforts to saving and enriching our families. All of this won't happen in an instant. Great marriages and eternal families are built brick by brick, day after day, over a lifetime. 

Think about that...a lifetime! No matter how flat your family relationships are at the present time, if you keep adding pebbles of kindness, compassion, listening, sacrifice, understanding, and selflessness, eventually a mighty pyramid will begin to grow. If it appears to be taking forever, remember, that happy marriages and families are meant to last forever. So "be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying a foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great" Doctrine & Covenants 64:33

Building an eternal family takes time, patience, and above all, the blessings of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. It requires you to be kind, envy not, seek not your own, be not easily provoked, think no evil, and rejoice in the truth. In other words, it requires charity, the pure love of Christ. Blessings will come and true happiness will be found from following the Savior's example.

Those who save their families are successful because they counsel with their spouse and family, seek the will of the Lord, and listen for the promptings of the Holy Ghost. In the Book of Mormon we learn of a people who had discovered the secret to happiness. For generations, "there was no contention...And surely there could not be a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God." It was because of the love of God which did dwell in their hearts.

Whatever problems your family is facing, whatever you must do to solve them, the beginning and the end of the solution is charity, the pure love of Christ. Without this love, even seemingly perfect families will struggle. With it, even families with great challenges will succeed. Charity never faileth!

In our efforts to strengthen our families, as in all things, let us follow the example of the One who saves and strengthens us. Jesus Christ is our Master. His work is our work. It is a saving work, and it begins in our homes. Love is essential to the Plan of Happiness. We should strive to be selfless and seek the well-being of others, especially our families. 

In closing, I know that as we strive to love as the Savior loves, He will bless our efforts. As we set aside pride, we will be able to see what is truly important in this life. As we nurture our relationships and put the happiness of others above our own desires, we will have a more perfect relationship. As we look for the good, we will find it. As we look to Jesus' example and strive to be more like Him, our families will be strengthened. 

I am grateful to belong to a church that values marriage and family. I am grateful for the precious truth restored by Joseph Smith that marriages and families are meant to be eternal. Families are not just meant to make things run more smoothly here on Earth and to be cast off when we get to Heaven. Rather, they are the order of Heaven. They are an echo of a celestial pattern and an emulation of God's eternal family.

I know that this Church is true. I know that the Book of Mormon was restored in our time by the prophet Joseph Smith. I know that we are all children of a Heavenly Father who love us and knows each of us by name. I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior and that through Him we can be forgiven. I know that as we put our faith in him we will be blessed. I know that families are eternal and I am so grateful for my little family. 

In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Mother-Daughter Breakfast

This morning, Elizabeth and I attended a mommy-daughter breakfast held at our church. The breakfast was organized by the Activity Days leaders. Elizabeth and I arrived promptly at 9:00am and had a great time visiting with all of the Activity Days girls and their moms. The tables were beautifully decorated with handmade paper flowers created by the girls as a gift for each of the moms. 

We enjoyed yogurt parfaits, fresh fruit, and muffins; as well as, chocolate milk, milk, and orange juice. The food was delicious and the company was delightful. We had such a great time visiting with the girls and ladies from our neighborhood. I am so grateful that we are surrounded by such amazing women and that Elizabeth has such great friends.

Elizabeth did an amazing job creating my paper flower. I cannot wait to find the perfect place in my craft room for it. It will add a much needed splash of color to one of my favorite spaces!

After breakfast, we moved aside the tables and gathered together in a circle to play a mother-daughter version of the Newlywed Game. We had a fun time trying to guess each other's answers to questions like: What is your daughter's favorite movie? How old is your mom? What is your daughter's favorite color? It was great to get to know Elizabeth a little better. We had a wonderful time laughing together. I love my Elizabeth so much and I am grateful for the memories that we made together today!

OIT Updose Appointment #14--Dairy

Today, Zachary had another successful up-dose appointment. He was able to up-dose from 10ml of whole milk to 15ml of whole milk. There was a little moment of hesitation when Zachary saw the nurse with 2 syringes full of milk...but after a snuggle from mom and a little pep talk...he swallowed the entire dose in an instant. I am so proud of my little man. He continually amazes me and gives new life to the words "I can do hard things". I don't know anything harder than looking at a syringe full of "potential death" and willingly swallowing it each and every day!

Zachary is the bravest boy I know!

Teacher Appreciation Posters

I was asked to create teacher appreciation posters for Zachary's teacher, Mrs. Hind and Elizabeth's teacher, Mrs. Passey. I have never made teacher appreciation posters before so I was a little nervous...but I think they turned out pretty cute.

I hope Mrs. Passey and Mrs. Hind know how grateful we are for them and how much we appreciate the work that they put in on behalf of each of their students!

We sure are lucky to have such wonderful teachers at Neil Armstrong Academy!

Toothless

Zachary has had a loose tooth for a couple of weeks...and today it finally fell out! I went into his room, this morning, to wake him up and as he stretched, his tooth popped out and landed in his bed. His little tooth is so tiny...I am glad that he could find it.

He is so excited and cannot wait to put it under his pillow for the Tooth Fairy! He immediately wanted to wake up Elizabeth to show her, but since it was only 5:15am, I made him wait so she could sleep.

 

My little Zachary is growing up. This is just another milestone that reminds me that he is not a baby anymore! I love him so much and I am so grateful that I have him in my life. Even though he is growing into a little boy, he will always be MY baby!

Art Night at Neil Armstrong Academy

Elizabeth and Zachary attend an amazing STEM school. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Math...But... tonight was all about ART at Neil Armstrong Academy. We were able to attend the first annual Neil Armstrong Academy Art Night. All year the kids have been able to have weekly art classes. They have worked so hard and tonight we were able to walk the halls of the school and enjoy all of the art the students have been creating.  

As we entered the school, we immediately saw this awesome box art that the 5th grade built and painted.

Elizabeth and Zachary were so excited to show us their art projects. We headed to the first grade hallway so Zachary could show us what he made. It was so fun to look at all of the artwork as we searched for Zachary's. The look of pride on Zachary's face when we found his little bird painting was priceless.

Zachary made and displayed a darling little bird painting and a hand-drawn owl. In the bird painting, Zachary explained that the arrows you see are drawn to show how all of the birds are "looking at and going after the same worm."

Next, we were off to the 4th grade hallway to see Elizabeth's creations. Elizabeth is so creative. Her first project was a slice of pizza with rainbow pepperoni. She outlined her pizza and the pepperoni in black marker and then used crayon to fill in and add all of the colors.

Elizabeth also made a beautiful watercolor painting of a flamingo.

Once we had seen Elizabeth and Zachary's projects, we decided to stroll the halls to look at all of the different art pieces displayed throughout the school. The school was filled with close to 2,000 art projects. It was an incredible sight!

As we walked the halls, we found another one of Elizabeth's projects displayed in a case in the upstairs lobby area. She did a fantastic job with this darling little pottery bowl. She was able to shape it and then paint it once it was dried.

Once we were done strolling the halls, we checked out some of the fun activities that they had going on in some of the classrooms. In the art room, the kids could paint a trading card size project.

In the upstairs STEM Lab, we were able to experiment with the iPads using the Osmo Creative Set and the Osmo Tangram Set. The Osmo Creative Set is so much fun. Once you select the image you would like to draw, you simply trace the image while looking at the screen and when you are done, you have a replica of the image on your paper. It definitely takes some getting use to...but is super fun!

We are so glad that Grandma was able to join us and support the kids. Here grandma is trying to give Elizabeth a few tips on how the Osmo program works. They worked together to create a horse.

Zachary used the same program to create a cute, chubby monster.

Next we were able to use the Osmo Tangram program. With this program you use different colored shapes to recreate the designs shown on the screen. This was super-fun! We could have spent hours with this awesome game.

Before heading our to dinner, we HAD to stop at the photo booth! The kids had fun posing in the different paintings.

Tonight was a wonderful night. I had such a great time strolling the halls with my little family. I am grateful for the staff and teachers at Neil Armstrong Academy. I am sure that tonight's event was an incredible amount of work and definitely a labor of love.  

We are so blessed to have an amazing school for Elizabeth and Zachary!

My Heart is Full

While at school today, I noticed that Zachary's class had some new artwork hanging in the hallway outside of their classroom. The theme was "My Heart is Full" so I searched for Zachary's. I was really interested to see what his thoughts were around Valentine's Day.

Zachary wrote...

"My Heart is full of Video Games. Angry Birds is my favorite video game out of all of them.

Seriously... I love this kid. He has such a fun, silly, and sweet personality. 

Marriage

While Zachary was at school today, I received a text from his teacher, Mrs. Hind. She included the above photo and explained, "Zachary had a free journal write today and his entry was cute and made me laugh". I am so grateful that she decided to share this with me. His journal entry made me smile!

His entry says,

January 31. 2017

I am in love with Rowan and when I grow up I will marry Rowan and get one hundred dollars.

If that was not cute enough, as we left school today, a girl was calling Zachary's name and running after him. Zachary stopped and said hi to her before proceeding to the car. When we got in the car, he says to me, "Mom. That girl running after me was Ava. I am going to marry her when I grow up." I said, "Oh really!" and he states, "Well, I might marry her, or I might marry Rowan...or even Brooke. Mom, it is so hard to decide. I wish I could marry all three of them...but there is not a guy in the world that can handle 3 ladies."

Seriously. He is too cute. I don't know where he comes up with all of this stuff. I am so grateful for my little man and for all of the sweet things that he shares with me.

Corgi

Kids Say The Darndest Things...

This morning, Elizabeth was looking at a book that she purchased at her school's book fair. It is a book about all different kind of puppies and dogs. As she turned to a page with a Corgi on it, she exclaimed, "This is the kind of dog that I want. When they walk, they strut like this!"...as she proceeds to strut around the room. Then she says, "It's like they got some "oomph" in their shoulders!"

I seriously love hearing all of the fun things that my kids say on a daily basis! I love their excitement for every day, ordinary things.

Kids Say The Darndest Things!

Today we were over at my parent's house, visiting my mom, who just had eye surgery. At the end of our visit, I asked the kids to gather all they had brought with them since we would be leaving in a few minutes. Elizabeth proceeds to go through a checklist...

Head....check
Body....check
Legs....check
Feet....check
Pee Pee spot....check
Bum....check

If that wasn't bad enough, Zachary exclaims, "Elizabeth, you know you should call that (pointing to her "pee pee spot") your crotch!

Not sure where they get this stuff...but it sure is entertaining!

Matt's Knitted Tie

A few days ago, I saw a pattern for a knitted tie. As soon as I saw it, I knew that I wanted to make one for Matt. I asked Matt what color he wanted and headed over to Kamille's to pick out the yarn. I finished the tie a couple days ago...Just in time for Matt to wear it to Priesthood Session of General Conference.

Matt looks so handsome in his new suit and knitted tie. He sure cleans up nice!
